Shikama
DOROTHÉE
MUNYANEZA
2026
Shikama comes from Gushikama that means ‘to take root’ in Kinyarwanda, Dorothée Munyaneza’s native language.
Shikama, or how to take root amid the world’s turbulence and life’s upheavals. Like trees anchoring themselves with multiple rhizomes, roots and rootlets to the earth they inhabit, whilst branches and leaves are buffeted by rumblings and storms, how can we ground ourselves strongly enough to remain standing, despite everything?
Carrying three times as many territories, worlds and musics, they resemble the three legs of a slightly unstable stool on the verge of tipping.
A swaying triple metre. An imbalance only held together by a saving movement.
A waiting that the third movement would resolve.
In this shared space and time resonate three syllables: Shi-Ka-Ma!
